About Us
As told by Jo drummond
Welcome to Wonderworld Aquarium & Pet Centre Ltd. Thank you for visiting our
website. About us as told by Jo Drummond. We began
our business in 1985 as an aquarium situated in Kuirau Park, Rotorua under the
ownership of Harold & Jo Drummond. At that time our business was called
Wonderworld Aquarium. We leased the building from the Rotorua District Council
and subject to that lease we were required to set aside a portion of our
business for tourism. So there we were for the next 11 years a Public Aquarium
with large display tanks of different species of Tropical freshwater, fish,
tropical marines, fancy coldwater fish , seahorses ,turtles, crayfish, snapper
etc and a retail section with every variety of aquarium fish we could get from
our suppliers. This type of public Aquarium / Retail facility was unique as it
was the only one of its kind in N.Z at that time and as an added bonus we were
able to take advantage of the thermal heating already in the building to keep
most of the tanks at the required heat and save on electricity. Boy those were
the days alright! Our retail section was up and going and always busy and we
thoroughly enjoyed this part of our business as we got to chat with the
customers and made many friends over the years. In 1996 we sought a change in
direction away from tourism. So we moved premises to 19 Fairysprings Road,
Rotorua. With the addition of pets to our business it was a wonderful challenge
and we absolutely adored this side of the business as much as we do the aquarium
side. We renamed our business Wonderworld Aquarium & Pet Centre. In 2001 we
moved premises again to 82 Clayton Road, Rotorua. Then in 2004 eighteen years
after starting this business Harold and Jo Drummond sold their business to their
son Ardie Drummond whom they had employed all those 18years ago. He had visions
of how and what he wanted to do and changes happened immediately after he took
over the business. Today 5years on, the business has expanded with another
building added 4 years ago to house our forever growing aquarium section making
ours one of the largest in N.Z.

Harold Drummond
With him comes a whole heap of knowledge and experience from years back. A
friend in the same industry once said that when he thought of him ?Rough
diamond? and ?Salt of the earth?came to mind. Perfect description. In 1985 with
$10,000.00 in his pocket, he bought his timber, nails , hammer etc and began to
shape his aquarium, next he bought his glass and made his many aquariums, no
trades men were necessary to this guy, he wasn?t going to pay out money when he
could do the job himself. To cut a long story short, we opened our doors 2
months later. Not quite ?Rome was built in a day?, but nearly. So when we moved
premises in 1996, once again he got his hammer out and again when we moved to
Clayton Road, and again when Ardie expanded his business. He had been
instrumental in building quarantine rooms for 4 different importers to Maf
specifications over the years, and did a stint of importing himself as well, but
at the end of the day he was just a retailer but a good one. Now it is march
2009 and Harold is now where his heart wants to be . He manages our marine
quarantine room. He orders our marines and takes care of each shipment that goes
into quarantine. He plays an important part in advising customers, not only
about the marines, but also the tanks and the equipment that goes with them. He
also takes care of any maintenance work that needs to be done. Again, he built
it, only he knows how to fix it. He is a very important part of this company. |

Ardie Drummond
Since taking over Wonderworld Aquarium & Pet Centre from his parents in April
2004 he has achieved quite a lot. 1. The opening of our new aquarium building
labour weekend 2005 This was so sweet having all the fish and the tanks and
accessories moved over to the new building keeping the old building for the pets
and pet products. Oh so much more room! 2.High security fence surrounding the 2
buildings. This was put up for security reasons to help keep our business safe
and secure. Also the fitting of security cameras in both buildings .
3.Quarantine room 2007. Importing our marines was brought on by not being able
to get enough marines from the few importers we had in NZ. That?s what prompted
us to get a quarantine room and apply for a importers licence. Then we had to
find good suppliers. It all turned out good and now we can import good numbers
and regularly. We are now supplying both north and south Island. We have also
managed to get a good courier Post Haste Couriers that understand our type of
live fish freight and how to get it to the customer early. So Ardie, with the
help of his family and staff has achieved much and continues to build this
company for the future. |

Judy Drummond
Ardie?s beloved. Judy hails from our accounts department. This brave soul has
risen to the challenges and demands of our business, focusing strongly on
fulfilling our financial obligations and making this her top priority. Judy sold
her own business, a boarding cattery, at the end of 2006 and since then has
split her time between her office and working in the shop. Doing whatever needs
doing from pricing and computer work, to customer service and sales.

Jo Drummond
That?s me! It?s 2009 already and we are going into our 24th year in business. It
seems only like yesterday we opened our doors for the first time. The family
unit has got smaller over the past 3 years with one leaving in 2006 and just
recently another two. With them went a wealth of knowledge and experience. They
have done the hard yards, so they will be an asset to anyone they have dealings
with in their chosen fields. I can vouch for that! Since the inclusion of our
quarantine and importing of marines to our business, we have got a lot busier.
There is a continuous flow of contacts from marine customers from all over NZ
with orders and enquiries. Importing marines, I believe, was a good move for us
and our customers can now benefit from regular shipments and a list of choices
every month. We use Post Haste Couriers to transport our marines nationwide. I
hope that I have covered all of the changes since my last write up. Thank you
for visiting our website. Kia Ora.
